US Flag Etiquette Rules for Home Display

Displaying the American flag correctly is a sign of respect. These home-display guidelines follow the US Flag Code and apply whether you fly your flag from a porch, a column, or a wall mount.
1. Mounting on a House or Porch
Most homeowners use a bracket attached to a porch column or near the front door.
- The position of honor: Standing at your front door looking toward the street, the flag should be on your right.
- The angle: Angle the pole roughly 30 to 45 degrees from the wall so the flag drapes naturally and does not tangle.
- The union (stars): The blue field should always be at the peak of the staff, the highest point.
- Clearance: Keep the flag high enough that it does not brush railings, bushes, or the ground.
2. Displaying Flat Against a Wall
If you hang the flag flat against the house or in a window:
- Horizontal or vertical: In both cases the union (stars) must be at the top and to the observer's left.
- Windows: The stars should be in the upper-left corner from the street view.
3. Garden and Decorative Flags
- Garden flags: Small staked flags follow the same rule - stars at the top-left from the street view.
- Multiple flags: The US flag must be at the very top of a shared pole, or hoisted first and lowered last on separate poles.
4. Lighting for 24-Hour Display
The Flag Code requires proper illumination if the flag is flown at night.
- What counts: A porch light that reaches the flag or a dedicated solar light is sufficient.
- No light? Bring the flag inside at sunset.
Home Maintenance Checklist
| Tip | Why It Matters |

| Use masonry anchors on brick | Secures the mount safely |
| Choose nylon or polyester | All-weather flags resist rain and wind |
| Don't fold a wet flag | Prevents mildew and fabric rot |
